A Tribute to Art Feldman

Dear Editor -

While the passing of Art Feldman was a substantial loss for Owen-Withee, it was also a stark reminder of how much he contributed to the school district and community during his lifetime of service. The list of his educational accomplishments, leadership, civic roles and church responsibilities are nothing short of phenomenal.

The Mr. Feldman I recall as a teacher was even more remarkable than the contributions he made and the accolades he received throughout the school district, Cloverbelt Conference, and state. Many of us have been fortunate to have had teachers who not only challenged us, but who also inspired us beyond our personal ambitions. I had the good fortune to have Mr. Feldman as a physical education teacher and coach in four sports. He was the consummate teacher! Always encouraging, respectful, and honest.

I was one of thousands of students with whom Mr. Feldman engaged over his decades in education. When I have returned to Owen-Withee, he has always acknowledged me as a former student. It has amazed me that even after fifty years, he somehow remembered an average kid like me. When I learned of Mr. Feldman’s death, the magnitude of his influence really hit home. Think of the scores of students whose lives he touched. His life mattered and will live in our memories in perpetuity.

Like many students trying to find their way in high school, I needed advice to help keep me on track. At our last official ceremony my senior year, Art shared the following advice: “always give 110%.” With those words firmly planted in my brain, I headed into an uncertain future. Thanks, Mr. Feldman. Your advice has worked for me 110% of the time. Godspeed!

Bill Conzemius, Owen-Withee Class of ’65
