OWEN – On April 19, Tammy and Bob Tomczak opened their downtown day care - Little Tykes Learn and Play Childcare Center, LLC. The Tomczaks are offering state-certified childcare at a second location on Central Avenue in Owen, as well as their home day care.

The couple bought the building from Jen and David LaRock in January and hoped to be open by March but the building permit and state inspection process took longer than they expected. When the remodel began they did not know they needed a certified plan submitted to the state prior to construction.

The state mandated that the building be handicapped accessible. And, because this is an educational building, they had to follow certain standards, which included having 35 square feet per child per classroom and had to have a fenced in outside play area. They hoped to be able to use the nearby park for outside play but the inspectors said it was near a high traffic area.

“You can’t just open your doors to a building and say it is a day care,” jested Tammy.
