OWEN - Many locals flocked into Marten’s Fresh Market on opening day March 10. Earl Martin purchased the business from Scott and Lori Jalling (Scott & Lori’s Family Foods) who had purchased it from Scott’s father Jack Jalling (Owen IGA). Earl’s son Randal and his wife also own shares in the business and will be a big part of this new operation.
Earl and his wife Etta were busy that opening morning but kindly stopped and chatted about the new store between bites of their lunch. The grocery store has been remodeled and looks bright and clean. Martin said Mason Brothers did the store set up and that Jeff Hill, the territory manager, facilitated the process. Local electrician Mark Klein has been working at the store from the beginning of the remodel. The walls of the store are lined with new floor to ceiling refrigerators, filled with both frozen and fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products, meats and more. The shelves are almost completely filled with product. A deli is nestled in the front corner of the store where Gloria, previous employee of Scott and Lori still presides. Martin explained that the kitchen is still under construction but when it is complete, he will be selling their own baked goods, pretzels and battered cheese curds.
“We will manufacture pretzels but I need to get some zoning issues settled first. I will make them and sell them here. We will be making the battered cheese curds also but the equipment needed is on back order. The hot food deli should be ready by next week. We had so many coming and asking if we are open yet, so we decided we were going to open Thursday ready or not.” said Martin.
The Martins have hired many family members and others. The former employees were offered a position but not all accepted. One former employee, was honored on a sign which reads “Gloria’s Kitchen and Deli.”
Earl and Etta have heard from many people who were anxious for this new market to open.“I heard so much excitement from people in town that we are keeping it a grocery store.” Martin replied. “Many thought it was going to be salvage store, it is not. But we will have a discount corner. We will have a section for big bags of flour and sugar which will cater to those with big families. Plus whatever we buy in bulk for the bakery we will of course offer it to customers.”
Martin was a little nervous about the new adventure, as he never owned a grocery store before, but said, “if they keep shopping like they are today it will be really amazing.”
Martin’s Fresh Market is located at 707 W. 3rd St. and is open Monday - Thursday 7;30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
