With everything going on in the world and kids going back to school how can you keep you and your family healthy to fight off any viruses or bugs you may encounter? Some of these are no-brainers, but some may surprise you!
First, of course, is a no-brainer of washing your hands. Just do it. Do it often and do it thoroughly!
According to the National Sleep Foundation many people do not get enough sleep and the numbers may surprise you. Babies under a year range from 12-17 hours each day, toddlers and preschoolers 11-14 hours, school aged children 6-13 need at least 10-12, teenagers 8-10 hours and adults 7-9 hours. Are you consistently getting 7-9 hours per night??
A diet full of whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds help fill your body of good nutrients and antioxidants to strengthen your immune system. Add in healthy fats like avocados, olive oil and fish to help decrease inflammation in your body. And when was the last time you ate sauerkraut or yogurt? These fermented foods deposit GOOD bacteria into your digestive system, where EIGHTY percent of your immune system lies!
Of course, this goes along with watching your diet, but I feel it deserves its own paragraph. Added sugars and refined carbohydrates, like in a lot of kids’ cereals, candy, many fruit snacks, etc. contribute to 1) inflammation in the body and 2) weaken the body’s immune response. Do you know that bacteria and viruses actually seek out the sugar on cells to feed on, multiply and thrive?
Even going for a 20-30-minute walk per day can help your body in tremendous ways. Regular exercise can of course help your waistline, but it also helps the immune cells regenerate regularly and helps improve your mental health as well!
While we’re taking about mental health...manage your stress levels. Prolonged stress in the body imbalances immune cell function which suppresses their response to invading bad bacteria and viruses. Sometimes it is best to turn off the news and put down the phone. Much of that is not always positive and can really sending your mind in spirals and increase your stress.
Drink LOTS of water. Staying hydrated increases your overall health plain and simple.
Help your body along with some supplements. Adding Vitamin D3, Fish Oil, a Probiotic and a good plant-based multi-vitamin, an add in all the above-mentioned immune boosting.
