Wendler and YSU team grab conference title

OWEN-WITHEE – Jen Wendler and the Youngstown State (YSU) women's basketball team have won their first Horizon League title and their first regular-season conference championship, since the 1998-99 season when they claimed the Mid-Continent Conference.

The Penguins earned the championship in a 61-54 victory against University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) on Feb. 26 in Chicago.


YSU shot 45.5 percent from the field and went 5-for-19 from3-point range. The team went 16-for-20 from the free-throw line, and 12-for-14in the final quarter on their way to claim a title they haven’t held in 23years.

Wendler said that the achievement felt “amazing.”

“I have never been on a team that has won conference and it is just the best feeling in the world. It’s just so amazing knowing that we are the first team in that many years to win a conference title. We have the whole Youngstown community behind us and it’s the best feeling ever,” the Owen-Withee graduate stated.

“I feel our team was so successful because we play for each other. This team is the most selfless team you’ll ever meet. Each day we playfor each other, do the little things every day in practice and are always cheering each other on.” 

The 6’2” junior forward appeared in 27 season games,starting in one, with 181 minutes of playing time.

With the Feb. 26 victory against the UIC Flames, the Youngstown women finished the season 24-5 overall and 18-4 in conference competition.

YSU complete the regular season as co-champions with Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and are seeded No. 2 in the Keeps Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship. They will face the second-lowest remaining seed on March 3 at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown,OH.

Jen is the daughter of Julie & Jim Wendler. She is majoring in exercise science at YSU.
