WIAA Volleyball Tournaments Scheduled Saturday

THE TOURNAMENTS:  The 57th Boys Volleyball Tournament and the 48th Girls Volleyball State Tournaments will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 at different sites for each division. The price of admission for the limited number of tickets afforded to schools for the tournament is $11. 

GIRLS TOURNAMENT INFORMATION:  The single-elimination tournament features matches with a best-of-five-sets, rally-scoring format. Of the 339 schools that opted to offer a girls volleyball program this fall, four teams will play for the State title in Division 1 instead of the traditional eight qualifying teams, with four teams still in contention for the State crown in Divisions 2, 3 and 4. Match-ups for the tournament is determined by seeding each of the teams in all divisions. Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln is the site for the Division 1 tournament; Kaukauna High School will host the Division 2 tournament; Wausau West hosts Division 3; and Little Chute hosts Division 4.

ABOUT THE GIRLS DIVISION 4 FIELD:  McDonell Catholic was bestowed the #1 seed. The Macks are making their third appearance overall and the first since back-to-back experiences in 2009-10. They won the championship in the first of those two appearances. The Macks defeated Turtle Lake 25-27, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 in the sectional final held at Turtle Lake last Saturday to advance to the State semifinals. Second-seeded Catholic Central, last year’s runner-up, makes its third straight appearance at State and its ninth overall. The Hilltoppers’ previous eight appearances have produced six championships and two runner-up finishes. They won three straight titles from 2006-2008 and back-to-back titles in 2011-12 to go with another crown in 2018. Their runner-up finishes came in 2010 and again last year. Prior to joining the WIAA, the Hilltoppers won a Class B championship in the now defunct WISAA in 1984. The Hilltoppers earned another shot at a title with a five-set victory over Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran/Providence Academy by scores of 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9 in the Central Wisconsin Christian Sectional final. Catholic Central is the champion of the Metro Classic Conference this year. The third seed, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran and the fourth seed, Prentice, are both advancing to the State Tournament for the first time in their programs’ history. The Lancers hung on to defeat Black Hawk in a five-set game by scores of 25-13, 25-23, 17-25, 10-25, 15-13 in the final of the Augusta Sectional. They were the champions of the Dairyland Conference this fall. Prentice’s path to the State Tournament came through the Prentice Sectional bracket, culminating with  a comeback 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12 victory over Three Lakes in the sectional final. The Buccaneers shared the Marawood Conference championship this season with Phillips and Stratford.
